Spring Shrubs It is now a good time to remulch beds. Once the winter flowering shrubs such as Sarcacocca have finished flowering prune them. Pruning flowers such as Forsythia Spirea Roses help to keep shape and increase their flowers. Use compost or peat moss spread it over the garden and till it under. Spring Veg Use plenty of compost or manure for your potatoes and vegetables; this will help the soil to retain water and moisture. Garlic can be planted in spring or autumn and can be ready late summer. Spring Lawn It is now a good time to remove winter moss by scarifying with a rake or mechanical scarifier. For the first cut of grass raise the mower 2-3 inches to avoid scalping the sward and leaving marks. Apply lawn dressing which will help green up the sward without promoting too much lush growth. Spring Water Ponds Now is a good time to clean water features and ponds by cleaning out the leaves and dirt that has accumulated over winter. Remember to check for wild life in the pond. Only use Aquatic Compost preferably a loam soil based because organic matter tends to float. You can split or re-pot aquatic plants when they have grown then pot in the pond.
